It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Visit Jen at Teach MentorTexts and Kellee and Ricki at UnleashingReaders to see what they've been reading, along with everyone else who link up

One of the things I've loved about my new teaching job is the flexibility.  (A whole blog post is coming in May about the "New job."  We'll just leave this here for now...)

So, this week, First Grade is reading:

91248

An incoming first grader manages all the things that don't seem to be going her way.  That dog on the sidewalk?  A big sister?  A copycat?  A mama returning to work?  Sleeping in the room alone?  So many things to navigate when you are 6.

As I started reading this book to my kids late last week, I was amazed and so happy at how well they connected to Ramona.  And as 6 and 7 year olds do, they immediately rushed to her defense of all things, "not fair."  Beverly Cleary knows how to write for kids.  She clearly understands kids and what they are carrying at each age.  It will be fun to read the rest of this book in the upcoming week.

Tomorrow is Beverly Cleary's 100th Birthday!  Have you seen the Today Show interview?  I'll wait.  Go ahead and watch it.

Friday, we will be celebrating her birthday with a birthday party in second grade!  All things Beverly Cleary.

Joy!

  1. It might be time to dig out Beverly Cleary's books for a re-read. I have them all in my media center. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  2. What perfect timing to introduce the kids to Ramona! I think it's a great read aloud. If you don't reel them in, I find kids don't flock to the Ramona books.

  3. Isn't it wonderful that a book written long ago is still making kids love the story, and connect to Ramona? Glad to hear about the class reaction and your party!

  4. My favorite line of Cleary's was "I didn't do it on purpose!" I'm sure she's a bit pleased with all the attention, but it is probably odd as well. I'm disappointed that we have testing tomorrow so we can't have a D.E.A.R. day!

  5. Thank you for sharing the link to the interview. I had seen a poster about the 100th birthday, but I had forgotten. I am excited to show the interview to my 4th graders.

  7. I remember reading Beverly Cleary to a group of grade 3 and four's in my first years of teaching. I think we went on a binge for a while. I'm so glad that she is still importent in the lives of young children.

  8. I adored Beverly Cleary when I was a growing up, it really felt like she understood what it was like to be a kid. I'm glad to see new generations of children falling in love with her books, too.
